Apply for a 2015 LCC scholarship

The Laveen Community Council will award at least two scholarships of at least $1,000 each.

Qualifications:
  1. Be a graduating senior who is a resident of Laveen, Ariizona,*
  2. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above,
  3. Demonstrate a history of community involvement,
  4. Be college bound in 2015. (Vocational and trade schools are acceptable.)
* Laveen is defined as the area:
  • west of 27th Ave,
  • east of 91st Ave,
  • north of South Mountain and the Gila River Indian Reservation, and south of the Salt River.

The Application Process:
  1. Please print and complete the application page (application must be signed by the student AND school counselor).
  2. Provide evidence of regular involvement in charitable activities or volunteer service, school, church or community organizations.
  3. Provide two letters of recommendation; one of which must be from a representative of where you volunteered for community service and one from a teacher or administrator from your high school. 
  4. Submit an official sealed copy of your school transcripts showing a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  5. Submit your 300 word, typed essay.
The Essay:

Please write an original, 300 word essay that answers the question:

“What role does community service play in your life and how do you feel your contributions make a difference?”

Past winners have included brief stories about their own community service and some detail about their vision for community service in the future.

The Deadline:

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

The Judging:

Representatives from the Laveen Community Council will review the applications and choose the scholarship winners. Winners will be notified by phone and invited to attend the 6:30 PM, May 5th community council meeting to read their essays and receive their scholarship checks.

College Depot

The Phoenix Public Library offers free college planning help by phone, online, or in person.

In addition to the planning kiosk at the Cesar Chavez Library (3635 W Baseline) they offer workshops and one-on-one assistance. Start crafting a plan at the College Depot or give them a call -- 602-261-8847 (TTY 602-254-8205).
